The Olympics in Shanghai

August 22nd, 2008 · 3 Comments

“I’m in Shanghai now.”

“Oh! So you can catch the Olympics!”

“Shanghai. Not Beijing.”

“Oh! Did you watch the Olympics then?”

“Only on TV.”

“Why not go to Beijing?”

I get that conversation a lot. Like, A LOT.

Let’s see. Beijing is 1089km away and almost 2 hours by plane which costs a fairly decent amount of money. And that’s before the event tickets (which apparently are ’sold out’, and some people have to buy them off the touts who sell them at a higher price). So yes, I’m in China, but I’m not about to go out of my way to join the circus.

But I did check out the Olympic Soccer venue in Shanghai. Didn’t go in, but saw the stadium from outside, all heavily guarded. I didn’t go there on purpose though. I was on my way to Ikea, just across the street. Hee hee.
